Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport have snagged the second and third spots among the world’s top ten global airports in terms of operational performance and punctuality. The rankings have been released in the 2023 On-Time Performance (OTP) Review by aviation analytics firm Cirium. The findings, released on Tuesday, highlight the excellence of Indian airports on the global stage. That’s not all! Within the medium airports category, Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport has secured the ninth position, exhibiting an impressive OTP of 83.91 percent.
Global Airports Criteria: Parameters for Size and Coverage
Cirium categorizes global airports based on their size and coverage. A global airport is defined as having 25-40 million seats and actual gate departure coverage of 80% or better. Additionally, such an airport must serve at least three regions, including its own region. Similar parameters apply to the large airports category. Medium airports, with 15-25 million seats and an actual gate departure coverage of 80% or more, are essential contributors to the global aviation network. The specified criteria ensure a comprehensive assessment of these airports’ performance and efficiency.
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport & Kempegowda International Airport Excel
With an impressive OTP of 84.42%, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad secures the second spot globally among large airports. Similarly, Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru stands at the third position, showcasing a remarkable OTP of 84.08%. Cirium has emphasised on the commendable operational efficiency of these airports in its review.
Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport Among Top Performers
In the medium airports category, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport in Kolkata secured the ninth position with an OTP of 83.91%. The category leader was Japan’s Osaka International Airport, boasting an OTP of 90.71%. It is important to note that this diverse representation highlights the global nature of Cirium’s OTP Review.
Global Rankings and Top Performer: Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in the US claimed the top position in both global airports and large airports categories, boasting an OTP of 84.44%. This underscored the global competition in airport punctuality, with the Indian airports closely following in the rankings.
Safair Leads Low-Cost Carriers; Asia Pacific Dominated by Japanese Airlines
South Africa’s Safair lead the low-cost carriers segment with an outstanding OTP of 92.36%. In the Asia Pacific category, Japanese airlines took the lead, with All Nippon Airways securing the top spot (82.75%), followed by Japan Airlines (82.58%) and Thai AirAsia (82.52%) at second and third places, respectively.
There’s no doubt that India continues to be one of the world’s fastest-growing civil aviation markets, marked by increasing air passenger traffic and the development of new airports, and Cirium’s report acknowledges India’s prominence in the global aviation landscape.
